Colorado Civil Rights Initiative Files SoS Complaint,
Launches Radio Advertisements About Initiative 82’s Campaign of Deception

DENVER—The Colorado Civil Rights Initiative (Amendment 46) announced today that it has begun a statewide radio advertising campaign designed to educate voters about deception being perpetuated by paid petition circulators for Initiative 82 (see attached MP3). In addition, CoCRI leaders have filed a formal complaint against Initiative 82 with the Colorado Secretary of State (letter attached).

“We undertook this two-part effort because voters need to know that they are being lied to by Initiative 82 petition circulators,” said CoCRI proponent Linda Chavez. “It’s clear that our opposition will stop at nothing to confuse or mislead voters. Before you sign, get the facts.”

The move comes after an Initiative 82 paid petition circulator was caught on tape lying to an undercover reporter at a Denver King Soopers on July 3rd (audio and transcript is available at www.FaceTheState.com). In addition, several voters from Denver and Colorado Springs have contacted CoCRI headquarters, alleging deception by other Initiative 82 circulators.

Amendment 46, designed to abolish racial and gender preferences in public hiring, public contracting, and public education, was approved for the November ballot by the Colorado Secretary of State after backers, including Chavez, submitted close to 130,000 voter signatures. Initiative 82, proposed to compete with Amendment 46 and written to preserve racial and gender preferences, has not yet been approved as petition circulators are still attempting to garner enough voter support to make it on the ballot.

The radio advertisements will run in media markets across Colorado for at least the next week.
